Prestile Stream Pollution Action Delayed as Officials Review Case
Augusta AP report: Maine Attorney General's office to decide today on possible legal action against polluters of the Prestile Stream near Centreville and Mars Hill. Assistant AG Robert G. Fuller Jr says a conservation engineer found the water quality poor and Wahlsing Inc. may be ordered to build lagoons. Canadian residents form Citizens International Pollution Committee to press action. An elderly couple near the stream was hospitalized from odor sickness. Local plan proposes a central Intercity Treatment Facility to remove waste from the stream. Canadian officials back the idea but will submit to an international commission. Centreville residents dammed the stream last week in protest. Wahlsing denies wrongdoing. The stream's water is Class D, suitable only for industrial waste.
