Offshore sand and gravel boom eyed by geologist
A U.S. Geological Survey scientist spoke at the Mineral Resources of the World Ocean symposium, predicting offshore sand and gravel will surge in importance. He cited 21 million tons yearly oyster shell lime and 50 million cubic yards of sand and gravel, noting federal waters are largely unmined but coastal demand will rise with urban growth. He highlighted a vast Jersey coast deposit offshore Barnegat Bay, depths 66 to 132 feet, potentially delivering gravel cheaply to New York and other cities.
