Ghost fleet of 180 ships waits in Hudson River fog
The National Defense Reserve Fleet keeps about 180 ships along the Hudson ready for quick reactivation at a cost of just over a million dollars annually. A 155 man crew maintains them, leasing vessels to shipping firms and using some as floating grain silos. The fleet grows from lessons of WWI, WWII, and Korea, ensuring the U.S. won’t be short of shipping again.
