Banker Fights Bank Robbery Rout, Two Dead
Eclectic Alabama banker Carl Ray Barker thwarted a bank robbery by subduing one bandit with scalding water and a pistol, then killing the second with a shotgun. The dead robber, James Bray, posed as 25 from Montgomery. a second suspect, William Hayward, 26, was wounded and jailed. They abducted Officer Maxie Taunton and Barker’s family, forced Barker to the bank, and tried to force the vault to open. Bray grabbed cash and fled. the bank’s time lock trapped the cash until 8:30.
