A sharp earthquake struck Mexico City causing tourists to flee in pajamas. Windows cracked and walls showed damage but no major impact was reported. power briefly failed and lines to other areas were down. Three minor quakes in Sonora and Baja California caused no casualties.
Three teenagers, John Woodward, Thomas Woodward, and John Carter, were injured by a home made bomb in Blue Hill. Investigators say they stuffed match heads into a pipe and struck it with a hammer triggering the blast. They were treated at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.
Rear Adm. Charles J. Palmer, commander at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, announced cost cuts of 5.3 million dollars in fiscal 1964, well above the bureau’s 2.1 million target. He said the savings improve prospects for new work. Earlier, Defense Secretary McNamara urged reductions and signaled possible yard closures including Portsmouth.
Gen Maxwell D Taylor may reshape Vietnam reporting by demanding broader sources and viewpoints from both military and civilian observers. He will oversee a unified US effort and report directly to President Johnson, aiming for balanced assessments while not micromanaging General Westmoreland.
Gov. William Scranton said Dr. Milton Eisenhower will nominate him for president at the Republican National Convention in San Francisco. Scranton aims to rally Illinois voters on civil rights to influence the 58 vote delegation and to block Goldwater on the first ballot.
Mr and Mrs Albert Desrochers of 41 Hill Street Biddeford were guests of honor at a surprise golden wedding anniversary party at their home. SAN FRANCISCO AP The 1964 Republican platform writers begin work amid a clash between Goldwater and Scranton factions over civil rights. Melvin Laird listed civil rights wording as a main conflict while Clare Boothe Luce leads testimony from nearly 200 witnesses. Senator Hugh Scott aims to mobilize moderates for a pro progressive plank, while Rhodes cautions against unacceptable language. Scott plans to label Scranton’s position as constitutional and moderate.
