Sugar Lobbying Draws Probe in Senate
A Senate subcommittee will probe efforts by foreign entities to influence this year’s sugar legislation. More than 500000 dollars was paid to lobbyists for foreign government clients. Sen Thomas J Dodd will head the inquiry, designated by Sen James Eastland. Kennedy called the lobbying unfortunate but noted fees and contingency payments tied to sugar quotas.

U S Eyes Sugar Aid to Dominican Republic
The United States plans a two fold aid package to back the Dominican government after Congress passed a sugar bill. The measure would set a 190 000 ton yearly quota for the Dominican Republic while the current half year export was 476 000 tons. Aid may include outright budget support to ease a financial crisis and offset the quota cut. Dominican officials say the reduction could hinder moves toward democracy.
