Coombs Sentence Is Suspended In Maine Slaying Case

Alfred Michael D. Coombs, 19, of Biddeford, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact in the December murder of Troy Ballenger, a Saco dairy worker. His sentence was suspended in York County Superior Court while Walter Davis Jr. received a life term after a guilty verdict.

Beirut Kidnapping Darkens Weekend Civil Conflict

The week of street fighting in Beirut left at least 277 dead and a U S Army colonel, Ernest R Morgan 43 of Petersburg Virginia, reported missing after being abducted near a Palestinian refugee camp authorities said guerrilla groups denied knowledge of the incident. Morgan was en route from a Pakistan meeting to the airport when gunmen pulled him from a taxi witnesses said. His fate remained unknown as Lebanese streets cooled after a new government formed and a cease fire was announced. News from Maine and New York followed including a trucking rate increase and the nations prime lending rate rising to seven percent under ongoing efforts to curb inflation.
