Paratroopers To Be Stationed Near Miami
The Army plans to move 1 000 to 3 000 paratroopers from Fort Bragg to Homestead Air Force Base Florida near the Democratic National Convention to counter possible disturbances in Miami Beach. Troops depend on threat assessments by Miami Beach authorities and may be kept on standby at Fort Bragg. The Justice Department will decide on deployment and Pentagon officials say use would occur only if police and Florida guards prove unable to control outbreaks. Four years ago 6 000 troops were sent to Chicago but were not deployed on streets.
