The United States informed Britain Greece and Turkey it will contribute troops to a NATO peace keeping force in Cyprus if terms for a settlement are agreed. The proposed force would total about 10 000 with the U S contingent between 1 000 and 2 000 men.
President Johnson and top officials finalize the U S position after a British appeal. Ball acts as secretary of state with Rusk abroad. U S proposes a component to a special peace keeping force, but no agreement yet and the package may not be accepted.
Mrs. Ann Lewis 35 and her two preschool children Michael and Sharon fled from a fire that trapped upstairs in a Fort Hill Hills Beach single family home. President Johnson told Congress that the government should expand support for farmers, reviving parts of the Brannan plan and extending Food for Peace and the food stamp program. He outlined changes in cotton, wheat, milk, and potatoes, and promoted rural development to cut poverty with a five year plan.
