Rumors circulate that Philip Scammon owner of City Square Auto Parts has purchased Beach Motors building at 445 Elm Street from Irving Beach. Scammon and Beach refused to comment while reports claim possible demolition to create Adams Street parking space.

Cubans Blame U S For Chill In Relations

In Havana the Cuban government holds the United States responsible for the cooling of U S Cuba ties. President Osvaldo Corticos in a televised policy address says the rift stems from U S government misunderstanding of the Cuban revolution and insists problems can be solved through normal diplomatic channels with full respect for sovereignty. He responds to President Eisenhower's counsel of non intervention in Cuban matters.

Palm Sunday Festival Set by Biddeford-Saco Churches

Maine Senate Rebuffs Private School Bus Funding Bill

The Maine Senate deadlocked 16 to 16 to not reconsider its defeat of the private school bus bill at the current special session. The measure would let municipalities fund pupil transportation to non profit private schools, amid a Maine Supreme Court ruling limiting public funds for such use. Senator Martin sought reconsideration, but remained opposed. a new favorable vote would have been unlikely. Continued on Page Two.

Saco Grader Is On Duty After Storm Preparations

Parts for Saco disable road grader arrived yesterday afternoon and crews worked late to place it in service by morning. Eighteen men began snow removal at 6 a m while waste pickups return to normal. Biddeford crews kept streets clear as Kennebunkport schools dismissed at noon due to the storm.

Girl Hurt Getting Off Local Bus

Miss Nancy Turcotte a 17 year old student of St Andre high school from Old Orchard Beach sustained injuries falling while alighting from a local bus. She was admitted to Weber hospital and kept under observation for a day or two with bruises and X rays to check for further injuries.

Protestant Magazines Question Kennedy Catholic Influence

Two major Protestant magazines the Christian Century and The Lutheran warned that if John F Kennedy becomes president he would be subject to Catholic Church discipline due to his withdrawal from an interfaith chapel service in Philadelphia in 1951. They cited Kennedy 1951 decision saying he had “no credentials” because the archdiocese could not support the chapel. The magazines predicted religious scrutiny would accompany a Kennedy White House bid.

Hills Beach Erosion Study Discussed by Officials

A Hills Beach delegation and a U S Army Corps of Engineers representative met in Mayors office to review an erosion survey begun last July and expanded this week. The four person land survey team is led by Ralph Hamilton with a future hydrographic party to follow. Local association leaders Fred Warren Alice Snow Eddie Goulet and William Sutton attended with Mayor Deschambault and City Solicitor.

Sweat-Shirt Mutineers Protest Drury College Dress Rule

Springfield AP report details a student revolt at Drury College over a dress for dinner rule. SMS students and outside supporters turned Drury dining into a soup line protest with over 200 rebels in sweat shirts while faculty ate by the dining hall.
