President Johnson urged Congress to fund a national housing and community development plan to curb sprawl. He sought grants and loans to local governments and private developers to ease rapid suburban growth with new classrooms streets and utilities while expanding public housing and urban renewal programs.
Pepperell Mfg Co workers voted unanimously to request a ten percent wage and fringe benefits package. About 1,800 Pepperell employees would be affected. a 60 day notice to terminate the current contract, expiring April 15, must be served by mid February.
Sen Margaret Chase Smith declared her bid for the presidency at the Women’s National Press Club in Washington. The Maine Republican, known as Down East’s “Hello Girl,” said she would run for president despite doubts about a woman’s chances. She denied a vice presidential plan, stating she would seek the presidency if she runs. Other declared and considered contenders include Nelson Rockefeller Barry Goldwater Harold Stassen Nixon Scranton Romney.
A Saturn 1 super rocket with 164 foot height and 562 ton weight is to launch from Cape Kennedy to place a 37,700 pound satellite into orbit in a first test of the live second stage using high energy liquid hydrogen. If delayed, a 4 p.m. cutoff applies. NASA aims to beat the Soviets in rocket power with this flight and plans another launch on Thursday for Ranger 6.
Paris reports France will establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China and exchange ambassadors within three months. The move draws U S criticism as Washington reaffirms support for Chiang Kai shek and the Nationalist regime on Formosa. France joins Britain in recognizing Beijing, though Britain has not exchanged ambassadors with Beijing.
Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara told Congress he has no hesitancy about the dependability of U S missiles. He argued missiles are more reliable than manned bombers in reaching targets during testimony to the House Armed Services Committee, a reply to concerns raised by Sen Barry Goldwater.
An American woman missionary was killed and another wounded in a rebel raid against a Baptist mission in Mangunber Kwilu province. The Congo government, led by President Kasavubu, says rebels led by former Education Minister Pierre Mulele are backed by Red China and has declared a state of emergency. Irene Farrel, 43, of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, died from an arrow wound. Ruth Hege, 58, of Wellington, Ohio, was injured. Continued on page two.
