The December rise in the Consumer Price Index, led by energy costs, pushed 1973 inflation to 8.8 percent, the worst in 27 years. Food, housing costs, and taxes also boosted prices, while real spendable earnings fell as inflation outpaced income.
Committee chair Mrs. Philomene Center highlights a separate six page citizens report alongside a 60 page schoolwide evaluation. A Wednesday meeting at Biddeford High School will discuss both reports and the district’s adopted recommendations. The aim is to boost citizen participation and use of community resources in education.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH Residents petitioning for a moratorium on new building due to suspected pollution of Goosefare Brook by run off and old cesspools in Cookman Lake area. Alexander Pike warned a beach quarantine could follow if sewerage faults remain unresolved. Plans for a town sewer project require state approval and funding, with completion possibly two years away. Councilor Bird proposed a nine month moratorium on new sewer connections while expansion proceeds. Dennis Sebian described the 208 program to group towns for water quality upgrades.
Senate leaders plan to push for a vote on emergency energy legislation by Wednesday to counter a potential Republican filibuster. Investigators questioned seven top oil firm executives about shortages and profits as weather and conservation were cited for higher inventories. Shell president Harry Bridges warned of acute shortfalls in coming months while Senator James Allen noted record profits last year.
Kennebunkport dealer Richard McCabe warns the lobster bait shortage will worsen. He notes redfish bait now costs $11 a barrel, up from $8, with 120 tons weekly in peak season. Causes include high fishmeal demand, Canadian redfish supply shift, rising fishmeal prices, and reduced redfish stocks. Lobstermen consider freezing bait or switching to trash fish as prices climb.
Local effort led by Frank Svatek of Biddeford Pool plans a community theater and area arts council to stimulate cultural life in northern York County. A meeting is set for Wednesday at 7 30 p.m. at the Ross Community Center to gauge interest and lay groundwork for organization and state funding.
Washington lawmakers Howard Magnuson and Claiborne Pell are to report to a New England delegation in Portsmouth New Hampshire tomorrow at noon on promoting a 200 mile fishing limit. Delegation chairman Elmont S. Tyndale spoke, noting state representative Tyndale and the Commerce Committee chair Magnuson will lead the effort with Pell.
