German Sea Rescue Society Prepares for Hazardous Missions
The German Society for Saving the Shipwrecked, formed 97 years ago, coordinates volunteers for sea rescues around the clock. Since 1865 it has saved 12 565 lives, with 624 rescued in 1961 and 270 saved in one night during 1945 refugee convoys. The group operates 25 lifeboats, a new rescue cruiser bought in 1961 for 350 000 dollars, and 11 wireless stations. 37 members have died. Public support is strong. fines have been imposed on others and an insurer covers the volunteers free of charge.
