Barbara Bond, librarian at Dyer Library, reported a bat lurking in the main room. The bat perched near the light fiction section and was captured by Officer Robert Stone with gloves. It is held at Dr William MacKenzie’s veterinary hospital for rabies testing.
Washington officials say President Johnson will propose a strengthened global push to explore the oceans to unleash wealth in minerals energy and fish protein. The plan aims to unite nations in marine research and avoid a colonial race while expanding U.S. funding for ocean science beyond previous levels as Congress weighs the second annual marine resources report.
AUGUSTA AP The Maine Senate refused to concur with House action and approved a $484000 bond issue for schools and sewerage at three Indian reservations. The bill back to the House follows a clash over fiscal management by Indian Affairs and funding to offset inflation. Separately the Senate approved a $12.5 million loan fund for post high school students, sending the measure to Gov. Curtis.
Guatemala police chief Col. Daniel Sosa Avila says Fidel Castro's shadow loomed over this week’s anti‑American terror, linking a plot hatched at OLAS talks in Havana. FAR killed two Americans connected to the U.S. military mission aiding Guatemala, amid urban guerrilla violence and a crackdown that has left hundreds dead.
In Tickfaw Louisiana 65 year old widow Maude Brock has strung four strands of barbed wire across a rural road claiming it as private. Neighbors Gayle Rogers and J W Jenkins allege shooting with intent to kill and obstruction of public road and have pursued action through police and district attorney with no success yet. The road is deemed public by parish authorities though Brock says the road is hers and used as a lovers lane. Mail routes are disrupted and deputies have yet to serve warrants as Brock remains unavailable.
Rev Robert E Baggs resigns from Holden First Baptist Church to become a full time executive for the New England Baptist Conference. The role centers on expanding a summer youth program into a year round cooperative effort with Ocean Park Maine facilities and interdenominational outreach while maintaining leadership in New England Baptist activities. He has a history of innovation in Holden and prior national attention for joint parish leadership at Glenview Community Church.
