Gold backing debate and dollar strength via economy
The text argues that political and psychological factors block removing the gold cover. Until 1945 the cover stood at 40 percent on currency and 35 percent on bank reserves, then reduced to 25 percent. By 1965 bank reserves backing was eliminated and some questioned dropping all gold backing. It concludes the dollar’s strength lies in the economy, not gold.
