Thor Test Program Completed In Cape Canaveral

The Air Force said the Thor intermediate range ballistic missile test program is finished and will be followed by three shots to test a new space engine. If successful, the engine would boost small scientific satellites into orbit and deep space on Thor-Able and Thor-Delta three stage rockets. The engine would produce about 165000 pounds of thrust at liftoff, 15000 more than the standard Thor. It aims to compete with Atlas and Sunik rockets with greater thrusts. Thor-Ables using the regular Thor have flown before, and another mission may soon attempt to place a 90 pound payload near Venus.
