Fire department, insurance and company officials combed the ruins of Diamond-Gardner Corp.'s main building to find the cause of a general alarm blaze Sunday. Fire Chief Horace L. Jose said the two story mill section fire threatened Knightville area and began in the mill, with witnesses hearing an explosion. He attributed the blast noise to a hot air explosion from the fire’s heat.

A fire swept the Stitson poultry farm destroying a barn a seven room house and 5000 baby chicks. Mr and Mrs H William Stitson and their two young children escaped unharmed into below freezing weather. Damages were estimated at 20000 dollars with the blaze blamed on faulty wiring.
Cumberland County Grand Jury returns 57 indictments including two for assault with intent to kill. Leo Paul Drouin of Biddeford and James Rennie of Portland are charged alongside Russell Wolcott Moses and Richard Brine with murders and violent crimes. Drouin sought for Oct. 26 Hasco Mfg. attack. Rennie under state hospital observation for assaulting his ex wife Mabel. Brine killed taxi driver Lewis Chandler Jr. in Standish. Moses accused in hammer slayings of his wife Lulu and daughter Frances.
Union workers at Bates Mfg Co in Lewiston voted Sunday night to terminate the contract expiring April 15. Local 462 members urged a New York conference to push for higher wages and benefits, noting no raises since 1956 and 1952 pay restoration. Wages at Bates average about 1.41 dollars per hour amid prior Maine cutbacks.
Hollywood AP reports a staged fight at a cocktail party honoring Sir Laurence Olivier caused by press reps not actors. Nobler stars missed the fracas as Guy Austin and Fred Norris clashed over comments to Norris’s wife Silvia. Olivier joked he planned the stunt for publicity, with Norris bleeding from a mouth injury.
The Chionchio baby, abducted from a hospital nine days earlier, was found alive in a Brooklyn second floor apartment. Police and FBI traced the infant to Jean Iavarone, a 43 year old divorcee and mother of seven, who was arrested on kidnapping charges. The baby was identified by footprints and blood type matching the Chionchio family. the FBI confirmed the child’s good condition and return to St. Peter's Hospital where the infant’s parents, Frank and Frances Chionchio, were reunited with their child.
President Eisenhower is set to tell Soviet Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan that the Western allies will not abandon West Berlin or accept a neutralized Germany. The two leaders will meet at the White House after policy talks with Dulles. Moscow meanwhile proposed a two percent conference for a German peace treaty and urged resumption of East West talks on missile age issues.
