Gas supply in New England tight amid record cold
A sharp drop in gas pressure left Maine and New Hampshire homes without heat in subzero temperatures. Portland Gas Light Co. restored supply by daybreak and prepared to reheat 3,500 customers after shutting meters to block leaks. About 125 workers and help from other companies were deployed to South Portland and Cape Elizabeth to close off meters. The Maremont plant in Saco halted heat-treating on one shift due to fuel lack, but boilers remained active. Evacuation plans and aid for displaced residents were organized by local agencies. Shortages were also reported in Manchester, Concord, and parts of Connecticut and southern New England. Gas demand spiked by the cold, straining supplies and cutting capacity at times.
