Society of Brothers founded in postwar Berlin and spread to America
A post–World War I Berlin group seeks peace and brotherhood by communal living. They fled Germany under the Nazi rise, established branches in New York and Pennsylvania by 1954, and in 1958 set up a three-site Brotherhood community at an estate in Norfolk Connecticut. They share income, run a common purse, and govern collectively while each family lives separately. They produce children’s wooden furniture and all members work for the community.
