GROTON Conn AP The alcohol poisoning death of a sailor is under investigation. Petty Officer 3rd Class Edward Roark Jr 24 of Dracut Mass died about three hours after he downed a pitcher of whiskey in a single pour to celebrate Navy submarine service qualification. A witness said friends urged him to vomit but he refused.
Treasury warns of savings bond chain letter schemes tied to Bi centennial hype. Commissioner H J Hintgen of the Bureau of the Public Debt says scams have appeared in the Midwest Florida Massachusetts Richmond and Baltimore. Most reports show posts left empty after bond purchases. Treasury has given available information to postal authorities.
A South Portland woman, Carol Clappison, was acquitted of manslaughter in her mother Edna Mae Clappison's suffocation death. The jury found self defense after a morning argument over housing in which the mother allegedly threatened with a knife.
Hartford AP judge refused to strike the alias Jesus Christ from court records. George Dotson, 26, of Daytona Florida, used the name for three days after arrest and faced charges of attempted first degree robbery carrying a weapon in a car and interfering with a policeman. He said the alias was to conceal his arrest from neighbors and friends.
The Kennebunk selectmen voted to file only a dismissal motion against Kennebunkport's suit disputing school assessments. No extra costs or fees will be incurred. The move aims to conform to legal requirements, with the town at risk of default if no response is filed.
Kennebunk High School and Kennebunk Junior High contemplate staggered sessions from 7:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. for high school and 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for junior high to share classrooms. The plan, supported by Spencer Trask and principal Shirley Grover, aims to ease crowding, add PE periods, and reopen labs and shops, though it could raise bus costs and shift coaching and study hall staffing. Public hearings will precede any start next school year.
SAD 71 board members voted to extend by six months a $250,000 bond anticipation loan from Casco Bank and Trust as construction of a new Kennebunk high school is delayed by Kennebport's pending lawsuit to dissolve SAD 71. The $5.2 million bonds cannot be issued while the suit proceeds.
The GSA will gather bidders March 4 in Biddeford with city officials and York County Counseling Services to pursue shared use of the abandoned Fletcher's Neck Lifeboat Station at Biddeford Pool. BOR backed a community center and Historical Society use. HEW backed YCCS mental health training. If no mutual agreement, GSA will award to the strongest proposal.
In New Hampshire Ford edges Reagan for 51 percent to 49 percent with 54 786 votes to 53 544 as Carter wins the Democratic race over four major candidates. Udall takes 24 percent and Bayh 16 percent, Ford calls the win a springboard to the nomination while Reagan claims a moral victory and vows to press on.
Ford edged Reagan in New Hampshire with 54 051 to 52 706 for 51 percent after 94 percent counted as Carter surged to frontrunner status with 30 percent of the Democratic vote. Udall trailed with 24 percent. The result foreshadows a drawn out contest across the nominating calendar with both parties facing intense scrutiny and strategic campaigning ahead.

A federal grand jury in Portland will convene March 5 to hand down indictments against Kennebunk pharmacist Warren Bowdoin and others tied to an alleged large illegal drug network in Maine. Bowdoin, imprisoned for valium selling, faces about 64 counts. The panel will meet again March 11 and 12, with partial indictments expected first day.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH The town council meets at 7 30 pm in Loranger School to discuss closing School Street Schools. They will review the License Ordinance Revision Committee’s Feb 9 workshop, extend acting town manager term, appoint building committee members, authorize a new alarm system, appoint inspectors, hear cost savings and bicentennial reports, consider urban renewal authority, approve B J Market victualer license, schedule budget workshops, and address skateboard problems.
State Rep. Robert Farley becomes the third candidate to announce for the District Two senate seat. joining Conrad Grondin and Charles Nadeau as bidders. The district covers Arundel Biddeford Dayton Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. Incumbent Guy Marcotte has not yet commented on his plans.
