Trial of Pierce Begins

A former Coast Guard cadet, stripped of his commission for marrying while at the academy, goes on trial in Machias for murdering his wife's parents with two dynamite blasts at a Jonesboro cottage. Four jurors seated. Pierce indicted on two murder counts and five attempted murder counts. his wife Cynthia later divorced him. Policers say a tip from his mother-in-law preceded his commission denial. Pierce, 22, is son of a North Vassalboro minister. his victims include Larson N. Kelley and Alice Kelley. The couple’s infant son survived. Pierce’s wife and sisters injured. He had been under observation in a state mental institution before returning to Machias. He was valedictorian at Waterville High and ranked high in his Coast Guard Academy class. His father pastors a church in Vassalboro.

Couple Perishes In Blaze In Portland Home

Portland AP report of an elderly couple, Neilson 81 and Elizabeth 79, killed by smoke and heat in a two story home fire. Their son Donald, 40, escaped from a bedroom window to the garage roof, was treated for smoke inhalation and released. Fire Chief William H Johnson cited a cigar igniting an overstuffed chair and said flames affected the living room sun porch and house interiors with an $8,500 loss.

Fire damages Eastport plant
