Gibbs Oil weighs Sanford refinery amid public concern

Gibbs Oil Co Vice President Herbert Sostek pledged in writing not to sell nearby land to other heavy industry unless Sanford asks for it. The plan envisions a 250000 barrel per day refinery, using air cooled systems to cut water use, limit fog at Sanford Airport, and reduce noise to 55 decibels. Editors Kidnappers Arrested After $700000 Ransom Paid

FBI says William August Halm Williams 33 and his wife Betty were arrested in Lilburn Ga on charges of federal kidnapping and Hobbs Act extortion in the Reg Murphy case. Murphy, editor of the Atlanta Constitution, was released unharmed after the ransom was delivered. He described his ordeal and the alleged American Revolutionary Army members behind the plot.

Biddeford Man Dies In Fiery Accident

Warren H. Butler 8,biddeford pool man, died when a kerosene can exploded while lighting a fireplace. Butler’s clothes caught fire, his body found near the fireplace by a maid at 9:21 p.m. His wife Linda is listed in good condition after escaping fumes. The accident is under investigation by Biddeford Police Det. Morin and Capt. Beal. Survived by widow, son Jonathan of Amesbury Massachusetts, and sister Mrs. Daniel Crowley of Salem Massachusetts.

Council Hires Inspectors and Approves Budgets in Old Orchard Beach

Old Orchard Beach council appointed a plumbing inspector and assistant and an electrical inspector at Friday's meeting. Jeffrey Merrill became electrical inspector by a 3-1 vote with John Bird abstaining. Joseph Mokarzel supported former electrical inspector Reny Remillard. Charles J. Mooers was named plumbing inspector for $5,000, with Mokarzel opposing and supporting Lawrence Haskell for $2,000, who was later made assistant plumbing inspector at $1,000 yearly. The town also awarded Municipal Code Corp. a $4,750 bid to codify ordinances and advise on violations. Commercial Electronics Corp. won a $5,250 bid for public works radio gear, with David Mooers recommending including lifeguards in the public works rack system. The council granted Earl Scott $2,000 for cottage damage at 4 Main St., Ocean Park.
