David Cony and Steve Withee went to Mayor Berton Braley on Tuesday as the case remains in court. Cony expressed concern over two residents from Withan Beach needing welfare and asked what could be done if they came to his door.
Penniless and sleeping on the streets of Saco for 48 hours two 19 year old boys Cony and Withee from Saco sought help after being cut loose from family. Mayor Braley and Samuel Zaitlin tried to place them and York County Counseling Service was contacted. Welfare eligibility requires residence in town, creating a gap in available programs. The police supervisor noted they are not counselors and urged a follow up on previous talks to set up a referral agency.
Webber Hospital Association outlines a four year program to replace or modify Elm Street facilities with a new 24 hour emergency unit, expanded mental health services, and extended care. The plan includes linking with York County Counseling Service and adding a medical office building.
AP reports Reg Murphy editor of the Atlanta Constitution abducted after leaving home with a man who wanted to discuss a story. The Revolutionary Army claimed responsibility while FBI and local authorities tightened security and sought clues.
Gov. Kenneth Curtis nominates Anton 42 of Biddeford to head the new Maine State Lottery awaiting Executive Council confirmation. If approved, the role carries a 25000 dollar salary ceiling and aims for summer operation with revenues to general fund and potential funding for education.
The budget board recommends about 370000 in new monies to be raised by assessment for the 1974 municipal budget and calls for re appropriation of roughly 34000 from last year.
