A 20 year old Army aviation trainee from Ft Meade stole a UH 1B Huey and flew a two hour course over Washington DC, ending on the White House lawn. He was shot at, wounded, and detained for psychiatric evaluation as officials review charges. The incident occurred while President Nixon was away, with security forces chasing the aircraft and the chopper returning to base unafflicted by major damage.

Washington AP reports a high level government study will assess U S vulnerability to cuts in vital imports. The effort will examine alternate sources stockpiling and diplomatic steps, with groundwork by a task force from the Council of Economic Advisers Treasury OMB and State Department. The 1970 Congress set commission previously warned U S dependence spans over 40 countries for minerals and fuels. In 1972 the United States imported all mica chromium and latinum group metals and large shares of aluminum cobalt tin nickel fluorine and asbestos.
Biddeford's 1974 school budget remains unsettled after a Saturday school board session. No major cuts were approved and the finance committee may review sooner, with an informal Tuesday meeting. The budget stands near the original total of 3,359,926, up about 20 percent from last year, but increased subsidies lower net raised funds to 156,260 or eight percent for local taxpayers. Outside income rises by nearly 250,000 to 1,559,926. Proposed cuts include charging parks and recreation rent for shared office space, and shifting snowplowing to the street department. Snow removal is budgeted at 5,900, hot lunch subsidies could be trimmed by 10,000 to 11,000 with federal aid. (Continued on Page 2)

George Meany said the administration misled the public for five years and urged Congress to curb inflation. The executive council, meeting for a mid winter conference, resisted extending wage price controls though some builder leaders favored continued controls in construction.
