In Kontum, Viet Cong guerrillas attacked a 150-man American detachment at 4:30 am injuring a U S officer with burns and shrapnel. Two Viet Cong were killed by an American sentry. the raid prompted questions about absent civil guards and security at the compound.
The Warren commission began secret interrogation of Marina Oswald in Washington to fill gaps about Lee Harvey Oswald. Commission officials said it would not hold public hearings and she is testifying voluntarily after being brought from Dallas.
Washington AP report on the civil rights bill as the House begins voting on amendments. Government leaders Johnson and McCormack say the measure will pass without major harm while Southern and regional opponents threaten changes, especially to the voting rights provisions aimed at speeding court action and enforcing equal qualification standards for white and Black voters.

Ewald Peters, chief security officer to Chancellor Ludwig Erhard, hanged himself with a bed sheet in his Bonn jail cell while held on suspicion of war crimes. A South Central Airline Beechcraft twin engine passenger plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Gainesville Florida en route to Jacksonville. Ten aboard according to the FAA. The craft originated in Ocala and served small Florida Georgia and Carolinas cities.
