Postal Officials Proud Of Holiday Mail Handling

Washington AP postal officials praise the Christmas mail rush handling and a three day delivery hiatus. Carriers enjoyed a holiday with no mail Friday Christmas Day or Saturday, and all mail went out Monday. Inbound and outbound totals matched prior levels with 40 million pieces less than the biggest day. Officials credit early mailing, ZIP code use, and favorable weather for a smooth peak. Rural delivery and perishables continued, with an estimated seven billion pieces this season. The plan could save 3 to 4 million dollars in holiday overtime and compensatory time.
