New England Braces for Storm with Snow Totals

A second major storm this week threatens up to six inches of snow across southern New England with patchy ice hazards on roads from Saturday night. Snowfall varies by location with 4-6 inches in the Berkshires, 2-4 elsewhere, 1-3 near the coast, and 3-5 inches in Vermont. The snow continues tonight in northern New England, ending first in the south except the Berkshires. Low temperatures range from below zero in the far north to about 20 in the coastal south.

Space crunch hits Kennebunk High School courses

Principal Spencer Trask told SAD 71 directors at last night's meeting that Kennebunk High faces a space crunch forcing course cuts. Last year several classes including marriage and family were dropped, and next year more cuts loom as enrollment rises. Language, French, Spanish, shorthand and other subjects face scrutiny as officials push for a new high school and expanded curriculum.

River oil spill threatens Delaware River shorelines

A 20 mile oil slick from the grounded Liberian tanker Olympic Games foully oils the Delaware River near Marcus Hook and threatens New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware beaches. About 133,500 gallons spilled near the Commodore Barry Bridge as Coast Guard officials monitor the situation.

Argo Merchant captain cites gyrocompass failure in spill

NEW YORK UPI The Argo Merchant captain testified at the U S District Court that the ship’s gyrocompass failure left him unaware of the vessel’s position for 15 hours before grounding, a key factor in the worst oil spill on the Atlantic coast. The spill, amounting to about 7.6 million gallons, extended 141 miles by 44 miles at its widest. Winds and weather were expected to shift, threatening Massachusetts shores. Coast Guard and EPA teams prepared containment and cleanup, with 50,000 gallons contained and a forecast of weeks to complete cleanup efforts.
