Julie Nixon younger daughter of President-elect Nixon and Dwight Eisenhower II were married in a brief Protestant ceremony at Marble Church. The couple, who barred newsmen, chose a private service with Psalm readings and no kiss.
Apollo 8 astronauts Borman Lovell and Anders report good health and sky high spirits as they race toward lunar gravity for the first manned reach of another world. Ground controllers note the craft is in near perfect condition aside from a cooling valve issue and cancel a planned midcourse correction.
The Pueblo crew of 82 was released near Seoul and undergoes medical checkups before flying to San Diego. Cmdr. Lloyd Bucher described the captivity as the most concentrated form of terror he’d seen, citing beatings and malnutrition. He stated the ship never sailed within 13 miles of Korea and recalled North Korean harassment starting early in the seizure.
In Paris the Viet Cong dismissed Ky’s call for direct talks with the Saigon government as invalid since the NLF does not represent the South Vietnamese people. Ky returns home to discuss direct talks with Thieu, while four-way talks on ending the war remain unsettled and in recess.
Barbara Jane Mackle, buried alive for 80 hours in a coffin like box, was released after ransom paid by her father Robert Mackle. He credited faith in God for strength during the ordeal and announced her safe return on Sunday as authorities booked Gary Steven Krist, a 23 year old escapee, on kidnapping charges in Dade County jail.
Pope Paul VI announced the second meeting of the synod of bishops will open at the Vatican on Oct. 11. The announcement came during a pre Christmas gathering with Cardinal members of the Sacred College, papal court officials, and Rome diocese delegates. The first meeting, held Sept 29 to Oct 28, 1967, discussed liturgy canon law seminaries and doctrine while avoiding birth control.
