Use of Oral Vaccine Urged By Luther L. Terry Panel

U S Surgeon General Luther L Terry and a vaccine advisory panel urge Americans to use the Sabin oral polio vaccine with a note of very small risk of vaccine associated paralytic polio. The panel estimates the risk at around one in a million, slightly higher for adults over 30. They urge continued vaccination programs focusing on children and young adults, noting progress from about 58,000 polio cases a decade ago to roughly 650 this year. The two vaccines, Sabin oral and Salk injected, are seen as tools toward eradicating polio in the United States.
