Munich police fear the death toll will rise after the U S Air Force Convair crash in downtown Munich killed 49 people. All 20 Americans aboard perished including 12 University of Maryland Union College students. Officials urged families to report missing relatives as authorities investigated the crash.
A humorous note from Copr Gen. Fea. Corp. advises not to rush conclusions about a meal precedents. The quip plays on steam and cooking as light satire within a feature brief.
In North Penobscot the Richland Peat Mines Inc plant burned completely with an estimated loss of 125000 dollars. Fire chief Donald Blodgett reported 50000 dollars worth of peat stored in a large building destroyed along with equipment and offices. The fire was blamed on spontaneous combustion in the peat, and several fuel tanks exploded during the blaze with no injuries. The main building was fully involved when firefighters arrived, but nearby peat drying facilities and a 1000 gallon fuel tank were saved by water suppression. The plant lies about 25 miles south of Bangor.
The fishing vessel Evelyn Brown from Gloucester Massachusetts was pulled off Casco Bay mud flats Sunday night after running aground near Portland. Authorities reported no injuries and the crew proceeded to safety, with salvage operations starting at first light.
Fire aboard the unfinished aircraft carrier Constellation at the Brooklyn Navy Yard trapped hundreds of workers and left at least forty burned as rescuers fought the blaze. Fire officials said pipes ruptured by the heat sparked the explosion and crews worked to free those inside while Navy teams evacuated the ship. The 60,000-ton vessel, 1,047 feet long, was nearing commissioning when the accident occurred.

The board weighs a $500000 offer from Ellen Steinberg of St Louis while Baton Rouge lawmakers consider a one cent sales tax potential for about $45 million to pay salaries and bills through June 1961. reforms include possible taxation of newspaper advertising. Louis G Riecke Sr. thanked Steinberg by telegram as the case battles continue under court watch.
