George Kirby Attains Breakthrough as Negro Comic Star

He became the first African American comedian to perform without trace of buck and wing, later film appearances and a televised beer commercial followed. Kirby served three years in World War II, rising to buck sergeant before returning to show business. He credits early family influence and a studious approach to entertainers at the club for his rise.
