Reports from Vientiane say pro Communist Kong Le battles with Phoumi Nosavan forces for control of the capital. Fighting began Tuesday noon and by nightfall pro Western troops seemed to hold, but Kong Le’s battalion rallied by dawn. Telegraph and shelling hinder communications and no foreigners were reported killed.

Reed Shifts Aim To Sales Tax Funds In Maine

Gov. Reed said Maine must look to sales tax revenue to fund a $6 million program of new services and educational improvements. He plans budget recommendations from his January 12 message and seeks a harmonious legislative session with Republicans. Snowstorm Claims Six Lives In Maine

Maine fatalities tallied at six after a 26 hour blizzard that hit Monday and Tuesday. Victims include Percival C. Davis 73 of Auburn and five others from Portland Westbrook Friendship Bremen Rumford and a seven year old coasting death in Rumford. Transportation gradually returned to normal as snow removal continued in near zero temperatures. Coastal regions bore the worst snow with 15 inches in Portland and Brunswick while inland areas reported 3 to 4 inches.
