Nuclear test in salt rock sparks cautious observations
Scientists hoped a 5000 ton nuclear blast in salt rock would create a cavity filled with molten salt and steam to drive turbines. The blast caused a moderate Carlsbad earthquake, sent radioactive gas up a mine shaft, and sparked radiation readings high at the shaft bottom. Recovery work faced delays as neutron measurements proceeded and a large concrete slab was tilted by ground movement. Observers 42 miles away felt the tremor, while officials noted peaceful-use potential and safety precautions for winter driving.
