Pease B-47 crash kills four airmen at Newington

Four crew members of a B-47 jet bomber from Pease Air Force Base died when the aircraft faltered after takeoff and crashed in snow covered woods two miles from the runway. Names and bases of the four, Maj Daniel J. Campion Jr., Capt Truman A. Burch, Maj John R. North, and Capt Bennie Ward Forrester, were reported with their spouses and parents. The crash occurred in bitter cold near zero temperature during a routine radar training mission.

Recount Dispute Resolved in Rockland Ward Three

In the 1st Congressional District recount a dispute over 123 ballots in Rockland ward three ended with Democrat Kenneth M. Curtis gaining 131 votes in the city. U S Rep Stan ley R Tupper’s attorneys asked resealing while Curtis says the discrepancy was an election night tabulation error. Curtis estimates about 100 net gains so far. Tupper’s lawyer cites about 90. Final totals remain unsettled as counts continue.

Three Americans Killed By Guerillas in Viet Nam Outpost

Viet Cong guerrillas overran a southern Viet Nam outpost, killing three American soldiers and nine South Vietnamese and wounding ten Vietnamese. Two of the Americans were infantry officers and the third an enlisted man. The post, 125 miles from Saigon, served as a command post for an operation. The attack comes as Viet Cong forces press a broader assault in the An Lao valley, with armored vehicles hit and fires burning around a district headquarters fortified by barbed wire.
