Crossing Crash Kills Five At Nashua Unmarked Crossing

A self-propelled diesel passenger car struck a truck at an unguarded Nashua crossing killing five people and injuring 27 aboard the train. The Wrenns, a bottled gas family, died with their two infants in the cab. Peter Woodbury, judge in Boston, was among the injured. Fire engines and ambulances rushed to the scene as flames swept through the car. The plant near the crossing, run by Koppers Co., was not damaged. The annual Maine Women’s Savings Bank party followed in Biddeford with 100 members attending.

Lamontagne Elected President of School Union 7

Lamontagne of Saco was elected president of School Union 7 covering Old Orchard Beach and Saco. Ms. Edward Smith was elected union secretary. Dr. Frank D. Lawler was rehired with a $500 salary raise to start June 1, 1961, and outlined next year’s goals including reading sub-primary, foreign languages, departmentalized elementary schools, work study, safety, and a summer program for 4th to 6th graders.
