In 1891 Lewiston and Biddeford clashed over unpaid taxes and city wages. Demas Rouillard said city clerk delayed payment for work on streets until back taxes were settled, with Mayor Staples demanding payment before releasing owed wages.

Near miss over Lake Michigan pits two airliners

An 727 from TWA carrying 77 passengers narrowly avoided a collision with a United Airlines 727 with 60 aboard at 21 000 feet over Lake Michigan. FAA said it was the 14th near miss this year. Both planes landed safely at O'Hare.

Runaway Fire Truck Crashes into Shoppers in San Francisco

A fire department truck ran out of control at Market and Sixth streets striking a crowd of holiday shoppers. Three people were killed, three seriously injured. Victims include William Moore 65 Angelina Moreno 77 and a third unidentified. Injured include Marty Sanderson 34 Ronald Lambert 45 and Jimmy Fitzpaurier 23. Officials said the incident was not driver error.

Trooper Shot At In Waterboro

In Waterboro Maine two state troopers were fired upon during a house visit to Charles W Oliver 28. Oliver surrendered after tear gas threat and was charged with assault with intent to kill.
