Miscalculation Lets Farmers Reap Windfall
Wheat farmers received 475.7 million in government subsidies last summer after the Agriculture Department underestimated future bread grain prices by 60 percent. The payments, based on a 1970 law, were issued because prices averaged 2.49 dollars per bushel but rose to 3.99. The error, called a mis judgment, means no further subsidies for the 1973 crop.
