Communist gunners downed three U.S. jet fighters including one from the Enterprise on raids in North and South Viet Nam. An Enterprise aircraft crashed at sea on its first combat day. four Enterprise airmen were rescued. Ground actions near Go Cong City left 14 Viet Cong dead with four prisoners and seized weapons. no U.S. casualties reported.

Saco sewer referendum petition fails under deadline

The Saco sewer ordinance becomes law today after a city petition to force a vote failed to reach the required 200 signatures by 4:30 p.m. yesterday. Wells Jet Pilot Bails Out Over Viet Nam Mission

Two U S Navy air crewmen escaped unhurt after bailing out over the South China Sea during their first strike mission against the Viet Cong while returning to the USS Enterprise. Pilot Lt. (j.g.) Robert G. Miller of Wells Maine and radar operator Lt. (j.g.) George F. Martin of Detroit were picked up by a rescue helicopter after five unsuccessful landing attempts due to fuel shortage. A Navy spokesman cited possible mechanical malfunction. Both men were reported fit for duty after medical checks.
