Macey acting commissioner of the Department of Economic Development at Augusta along with friends of the Kirkpatricks from Marblehead and Boston oversee the seven month construction of the boat at Kennebunk yard. The Daisy features a 105 hp diesel engine an automatic ship to shore telephone and a sounding machine. It sleeps seven single or ten double and carries 400 gallons of oil and 300 gallons of water. Designers are Edridge and McInnis.
Fidel Castro's government increased armed forces readiness in Havana with more soldiers and militia at key sites after intelligence on possible anti Castro exiles incursions on the North Coast. The alert followed a prior state of preparation and reports of larger raids.
Rescuers report five more Utah miners alive and 10 bodies recovered, leaving 25 trapped underground after the blast accounted for. Efforts continue to probe a rescue hole for Louis Bova as Castro regime alerts militia and moves big guns to Cuba northern coast amid reports of a new invasion. Senator Smathers doubts Senate action on Kennedy tax cut this year. U.S. students who visited Cuba despite a State Department ban return. A stand in occurs at Idlewild Airport protesting passport validation. Castro accuses U.S. raids as part of a new aggression plan. Cuban exile group claims Aug. 19 raid from bases in the Caribbean and inside Cuba. Refugees report Soviet troops in Havana. bridges and strategic points occupied. Kennedy notes a further decline in Soviet forces in Cuba but says remaining troops are likely training focused.
Five more miners were found alive as rescue efforts continued in the MOAB mine disaster. The final death toll reached 18 with two men escaping through a tunnel and others recovered from the same shaft as authorities planned a joint state federal inquiry into safety practices.
Maine officials report a river pollution issue near Saco Tanning Corp is being settled out of court. Wayne Hollingsworth says the mystery mass problem should be resolved soon after talks with tannery officials. The case concerns waste materials and sludge banks along the Saco River threatening public health and shoreline property. Local boaters and Rumerys Boat Yard owner Earle Rumery have pressured action as tourists and boats are affected.
Labor Day will close most plants and businesses with a long weekend. Pepperell Mfg Co operates on a six day week and will open Saturday, then close Saturday night and reopen Monday midnight. Biddeford Saco post offices will close, with lobby hours 6 30 am to 6 30 pm and limited mail handling. Saco mail will be dispatched normally, outgoing mail cut off at 5 50 pm.
Fifty American students who defied a State Department ban on travel to Cuba returned by plane from Madrid. At Idlewild Airport they staged a stand in to protest passports being marked invalid for the trip, which ended with letters suspending the passports though not marking them invalid. A spokesman said five students declined to participate and about five disliked Cuba. Ten students were subpoenaed to appear before HUAC.
Hazleton authorities report a television camera lowered into the mine chamber from which Henry Throne and David Fellin were rescued sighted what appeared to be a man's body. Officials warned caution as reinspection was planned. Louis Bova remains missing since the Aug. 13 cave in.
Senator George Smathers says the Senate will likely delay action on President Kennedy’s tax cut bill due to a possible civil rights debate. He notes House delays and a Senate tie up could push hearings into October and beyond, delaying any tax relief until 1964.
Parachutist John Lawler of Manchester is enrolled in the first jump course at the Orange Airport Parachuting Center at age 63. He bills himself the world’s oldest sport parachutist and seeks to rejoin exhibition jumps after a 17 year ripcord drought, completing ground training to ascend again.
