Region Reports Sharp Crime Rise in New England in 1971
The FBI Uniform Crime Reports show New England had the nation's largest 14 percent rise in serious crime in 1971, nearly double the national rate. Violent crime up 24.5 percent and property crime surged 43.2 percent with auto theft up 13.3 percent. Massachusetts led states with 56,709 cars stolen and stores the highest auto theft rate 984.9 per 100000, prompting Massachusetts new auto title certificate law taking effect Friday.
