Calvin D. MacCracken and Helmut J. Schmidt were granted patent 3,751,935 for an ice slab mat system that creates and maintains ice on outdoor surfaces. The mat uses small plastic tubes with antifreeze, sections four by eighty six feet, and can be rolled or linked to form full rink grids. Ice Systems, Inc. licenses and expands year round rinks and even a pond based speed-skating course.
