West German Vessel Suspected in Net Damage Incident

Kennebunkport fishermen filed formal complaints with the National Fisheries Service accusing a 300 foot West German stern trawler, possibly named West Hild, of deliberately damaging their gear along Jeffery Ledge. About 4200 ft of gillnetting was damaged, with losses totaling roughly 3,509 dollars in equipment and 2,500 dollars in lost income over four days. Authorities plan to forward the cases to the State Department for potential recompense from the foreign vessel's country.

The Episcopal Church House of Bishops approved a resolution stating 11 women ordained in Philadelphia on July 29 are not priests and may not perform priestly duties. The ruling, amid a two day session, invoked internal discipline for women or bishops who practice or permit priestly acts. Eleven women respond that they remain priests and will decide how to affirm their vocation. The decision targets actions by four bishops involved in the ordinations and leaves disputed questions to future conventions.
