Guardsmen Open Fire as Los Angeles Riots Spread

National Guardsmen fought looters and snipers in a devastated Watts area. One sniper was killed, another wounded. a sheriff's deputy and eight Negro civilians were reported dead. Firemen and civilians suffered major casualties as fires destroyed blocks, with 2,000 guardsmen moving in and 3,000 in reserve to quell the unrest.
