Plante To Retain Post At Beach Old Orchard Beach Chamber names executives
Jerome G. Plante was reap pointed executive director for 1960 by the Old Orchard Beach Chamber of Commerce at a Wednesday evening meeting. The annual dinner is set for Sept. 9. A nominating committee was named with Mrs. Mary Manduca as chair. Nearly $1,600 was raised to aid Maurice Couture, shot during a holdup at a Beach picnic grounds. Advertising policies for the chamber brochure were outlined. President Irving McNayr presided.

Truck Splits Carrying Gas Tanks Crashes in Portland

Washington The House Ways and Means Committee voted a one-cent increase in the federal gasoline tax effective Sept 1 to sustain the highway program for 22 months. The panel also redirected some motor vehicle and parts taxes to the highway fund and approved a 3-cent motor fuel tax to 4 cents until June 30 1961. Future funds would come from diverting treasury revenues and excise taxes on autos and parts for three years, enabling about 1.8 billion dollars in 1961 and 2 billion in 1962 for construction, as states delay contracts awaiting federal reimbursements.
