Large Balmoral crowd hopeful to glimpse the Queen saw her absent from Cra Thie Church as services were moved inside the castle amid tight security. A noted incident involved a trio attempting to enter the ring, then confronting bulls after breaching a fence.
In Lisbon a bullfight promoter died and two companions were gored when they leaped into the ring to flee a rampaging bull and met three other bulls released by the crowd. The promoter was speaking with the men when the incident occurred.
Manila reports more than 1,000 Philippine army troops assumed police duties in Ilocos province after six killings in three weeks, with at least four deaths blamed on politics.
The Rome Appeals Court ruled soprano Maria Meneghini Callas owes nothing to Prince Marcantonio Pacelli over nonfattening spaghetti. The decision was made public today with the ruling continued on Page Seven.
Former President Herbert Hoover, 85, on Meet the Press, says Khrushchev could bring peace to the United States if he embraces peaceful coexistence, but notes Soviet tactics and world domination remain likely. Hoover spends his birthday at work, aided by six secretaries amid busy correspondence.

In Portsmouth New Hampshire an AP report notes a large B 52 bomber crashed in southeast New Hampshire with all eight crewmen parachuting to safety. Unconfirmed reports say they were unharmed and no explosion or fire occurred. The bomber was based at Westover Air Force Base Chicopee Massachusetts. A KC 97 crash at Andover New Hampshire on July 22 killed seven crew members. Dow AFB Maine said one crew member was picked up near Grenier Air Force Base outside Manchester New Hampshire. Dow officials said the stricken aircraft reported it was eight miles from their field and entering for a crash landing, a scenario considered unlikely due to instrument malfunctions.
Rock Island Illinois toll collectors on the Centennial Bridge to Davenport Iowa were suspended after a $750,000 tolls shortage. The bridge commission will install automatic toll collecting, as police take over duties amid an FBI and state inquiry into thefts linked to a faulty treadle counting system. The move affects about 10,000 autos and 2,000 trucks daily.
Rufus Robinson, jailed three years ago for an assault over ownership of a suit, was released last week and found Abe Marion to resume the argument. Back in jail, Robinson declared he would get that suit if he lives long enough.

In Burlingame California Patrolman Robert Quinn cited William J McDonald age 20 for driving 45 mph in a 25 mph zone. McDonald sped away, parked in a residential area, then attempted to restart his car. The officer reappeared with ticket book. McDonald faced additional charges for reckless driving stop sign siren red light evading arrest and assault and battery.
Washington AP reports the Democratic presidential race growing tighter as top contenders edge out favorite sons. Governors at San Juan meet showed little support for Meyner or Williams, while Kennedy holds at least secondary backing across states. Stevenson remains noncommittal on a third bid, and Freeman received polite reception without public recruits.
Boston AP Cardinal Cushing calls for a peace novena starting Sept 15 the day Khrushchev visits the United States. He asks all in the archdiocese to join in nine days of rosaries for Russia nations in bondage and universal peace noting the Fatima prayers as a “secret weapon” during Khrushchev's visit.
Havana reports intensified news blackout amid unconfirmed arrests of civilians and soldiers amid alleged military conspiracy. Isolation grows at Camp Libertad near Havana with calls unanswered. Officials deny detainee counts approach one thousand, while reports claim 200 or more held for questioning.
Asbury Park New Jersey reinforced its clash with Maine over clams. William J. Kelb of F. H Snow Canning Co. said Maine firms source all clams from New Jersey. New Jersey packs clams for New England chowder at New Jersey and Pine Point plants, but all the clams are Jersey. Kelb defended quality and lack of preference, noting New Jersey has more clams. The dispute mirrors the broader rivalry over native Maine lobsters.
