Los Angeles Preserves Heritage Through Cultural Monuments
Los Angeles created a Cultural Heritage Board under the Municipal Art Department with power to designate monuments. Owners cannot alter or destroy designated sites without permission, hearings are held, and civic groups may acquire titles to save them. Fifteen monuments have been declared including Watts Towers, with at least one saved from demolition. Future success depends on upcoming preservation actions.
