Pasadena based scientists report Viking 1 may lose its soil sampler arm for good after it jammed while fetching soil for organic chemistry tests. They will inspect the arm and push ahead with the organic analysis using remaining instruments, hoping to still gather enough soil from the mission before the jam.
Dick Lafortune of Biddeford found two men stealing his car battery at Roberts Pond in Lyman and tracked the thieves by their license plate. He reported to a cottage owner who said two men had asked for a jump start earlier. Sheriff deputy and the district attorney could not authorize a complaint due to lack of positive identification, leaving Lafortune frustrated.
