Retaliation For Attacks In Tonkin Gulf
Washington AP reports Secretary of Defense McNamara announced U S Navy bombers struck four North Vietnamese bases and an oil depot in retaliation for attacks on U S destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin. Two U S aircraft were shot down and two damaged during 64 sorties from carriers Ticonderoga and Constellation. About 25 patrol boats were damaged or destroyed. Johnson said air strikes are a measured response and risks of widening the war exist. The U S moved substantial reinforcements to Southeast Asia and U S jet fighters were rushed to South Vietnam for potential escalation.
