Background on the Vietnam War from Browne interview
Malcolm W. Browne, AP chief in South Viet Nam, answers reader questions about the war. He says fighting and casualties persist with no clear gain, the Viet Cong recruiting as fast as it loses, and a possible indefinite outcome. He notes deep American involvement short of combat divisions and fears a swift Diem government collapse without U.S. support.
