Onassis oil refinery project adds to secrecy around wealth

Secrecy frames the Onassis business empire as an AP report notes the Greek tycoon backs a large New Hampshire refinery while keeping ownership opaque through hundreds of offshore companies. The profile traces his rise from poverty to wealth and his postwar fleet expansion amid tax‑friendly registrations.

Onassis Faces US Legal Troubles Over War Surplus Ships

In 1958 a federal grand jury indicted Aristotle Onassis for conspiracy to defraud the United States by gaining control of 23 U.S. war surplus ships in violation of the rule that ships stay in American hands. Settlements forced him to pay 7 million dollars, hand control of the surplus ship companies to his American children, and build four tankers in U.S. yards. He ended with 12 surplus tankers and two Liberty ships under foreign flags. He complained he paid the U.S. government twice for his ships at a 1958 congressional hearing, while lawmakers sought details on the foreign ownership linked to Ariona. The refinery dispute in New Hampshire was also noted.
